The Van, The Dream, and The Lesson

Did I buy a van while barely scraping by? Absolutely not. I made a conscious decision to invest in a reliable, everyday vehicle—something I could drive daily while also transforming it into my dream camper. And that’s exactly what I did. I used my tax return money to buy a car that fit both needs: practical for now, with the potential to become something more.

What I do regret, however, is how I handled the first month after purchasing it. In my excitement, I rushed headfirst into the conversion process, eager to see my vision come to life as quickly as possible. I started buying materials and items for the build without much planning, stretching my budget thin for that month. The excitement was intoxicating—finally owning the van I had dreamed of for so long—but in my haste, I overlooked an important truth: the journey matters just as much as the destination.

Building a camper van costs money, and trying to speed through the process only increases the financial strain. I realized that if I continued on that path, I would be pulling funds from my home budget—money meant for daily expenses, for my children, for the life we already live. That was not something I was willing to compromise.

So, after that first month, I paused. I took a step back and reevaluated. This wasn’t a race; it was an experience to be enjoyed. I reminded myself that I could build this van thoughtfully, piece by piece, without burdening my household finances. I started looking for creative, budget-friendly ways to move forward. Scouring Facebook Marketplace, checking out yard sales, repurposing materials—whatever I could find to reclaim, renew, or rebuild.

More than anything, I want this journey to be an example for my children. I want them to see their mother as a resourceful, adaptable, and strong woman—someone who builds her dreams with intention and resilience. I want them to learn that money does not define us. It is merely a tool, a means to an end, and with determination and creativity, there are countless ways to reach our goals.

I am proud of my dream. I am proud of myself. And most of all, I am proud of my family for being part of this journey with me.
